Now an agitator in a washing machine is generally found in top loading type machines and are said to take care of the laundry that are put into it for cleaning. This particular part is found jutting out from the lower part of the wash basket. It is said to help the washing activity move in a circular manner moving from the back to the front and front to back in most of the appliances. This part is also believed to make the garments loaded for washing roll from the upper part of the wash tub to the lower part and back again. In the newer machines this agitator is fitted with double action thereby giving the machine a three-time rollover action.
This extra feature offers a particular circular movement to the machine. This agitator feature in the top loading models is safeguarded from damage when being transported. The agitator is linked to the tub and the sunbber that can be seen on the under side of the machine. It is this part that causes the vibration in the machine and if it has not been correctly installed it could probably prevent the machine from working or become slow. In such cases the agitator may have to be replaced.
There are many types of agitators that you can avail of today. You can select one depending on the model that you plan to fix it to. The two main types of agitators that are popular today are the dual-action agitator and the straight-vane agitator and practically all brands manufacture them.
In the case of the straight-vane agitator, one part is attached to the lower part of the appliance and it is the fins on the side that assist the agitator in moving forward and backward. The dual-action agitators as the name suggests has two components and is fitted just below the fins and is responsible for making the agitator move backward and forward in a circular movement along a certain track. In addition this extra feature is also responsible for rotating the spiral top in a clockwise direction thereby helping to safeguard fabrics from the lower part of the fins.
Issues that could be Encountered when using Agitators
It is the agitator that is responsible for creating the mechanism to vibrate, revolve and gives it the necessary movement. At times it faces problems that may cause erratic movements in the appliance. When this happens, the power of oscillation of the agitator lessens and finally the agitator will stop functioning. These agitators are also the cause for electrical circuit breaks that can prevent the agitators from working. Even an overload of clothes in the appliance can make the agitators to drone and vibrate as a result of which the clothes do not get cleaned.
There are times when the agitator in the gadget makes a lot of noise, the shaking becomes erratic and the machine consequently stops working. Since the component is usually fitted to the finnier area of the shaft of the tub a couple of the issues that are related to the agitator can be eliminated by setting the agitator right and in some cases they may even have to be replaced.
Remember that the agitator should be fixed into the machine by experienced hands as they need to be connected to electrical connections. If the circuit breaks get an electrician to fix it for you.
Usually the tub and the wash baskets in the apparatus do not give any trouble as the agitator is fitted on the inside of the wash tub, but if the agitator does not work properly the clothes may be spoiled and this could make more noise inside and it will eventually stop working.
These are some of the signs that tell you that the agitator needs to be replaced. While removing and replacing agitators ensure that the appliance is disconnected from the source of power so as to avoid any accidents. The agitator could also vibrate more noisily if the sunbber is worn out. This implies that it is the snubber that has to be replaced. Always enlist the help and advice of an electrician as it is imperative that any home appliance should be correctly installed and checked before you start using them.

Advanced and high-grade washing machines are available in the market that makes washing effortless, less time consuming and easy. However, many customers still hesitate to wash their delicate clothing in the washing machine. If you don’t know how to wash the delicates in the appliance, you can end up damaging the clothes. Here are some useful guidelines that should be considered while washing your delicates.
The spinning cycle of the washing machine is main cause for the damage of the clothes. Since front loading washing machines are free from agitator delicate clothes are not damaged easily. If you have a top loader you should be very careful while cleaning the delicates and the built-in agitator could ruin the clothes.
Sort the Clothes
Before doing laundry, you should sort the clothes and separate the delicate clothing from others. To be on the safer side, the delicate clothes should be washed separately. If there are stains, you should remove them first before putting in the washer. Using bleach for the delicate clothes when washing in a front loader is not wise. This is because, the front loader uses powerful water and detergent immersing functions and it will cause the bleach to set in the delicate clothing resulting in holes.
Use Mesh Bags
The mesh bags are very useful while cleaning your delicates. Most of the washers come with the mesh bag and you can use them. If they are not provided along, you can purchase them separately. The delicates you intend to wash can be inserted in the bag and you can close it with the button or zip. The bag allows the clothes to be washed but protects them from direct spinning effects.
Choose delicate wash cycle
By choosing the delicate wash cycle, you can clean your delicates effectively with gently care. It protects the delicate garments from damages and keeps them in good condition. When you select the medium water setting or gentle cycle, the drum is prevented from intense spinning.
Once the delicates are washed you can dry them in the machine for just 15 to 30 minutes. Do not use the dryer for drying the clothes completely. After the clothes are dried partially you can hang them under sunlight. By keeping in mind these tips you can free yourself from washing the delicates manually.

When the appropriate water level is attained the switch finishes a course to the machines timer and machine motor, and to the agitator control.
While the machine is on fill part, the switch contacts water control valves provided at water inlet, so that water fills in the washing machine. The timer motor runs only when the required water level is attained. Hence, there is no need to worry about running time being lost when the machine is in the fill process.
Float-type switches were used in earlier models of washing machines to set water level. Today, more efficient pressure-type water level switches are employed. A hose connects to air bell placed below the outer tub of the machine. From there it links to the pressure switch at the back of the control panel. During the water filling procedure, an air pocket occurs inside the plastic hose.
When water rises inside the tub, air pressure inside tube also increases. It goes on increasing till it makes the diaphragm inside the pressure switch activate switch contacts. Once this happens, the circuit to the valve is opened and the flow of water in to the tub is stopped. When the draining process begins, the air pressure inside the hose begins to come down permitting the diaphragm of the pressure switch to reorganize the switch links.

The detergent dissolves the dirt stuck on the fabrics and loosens it through flexing and forcing of clothes, and soap aids in soil removal. Each machine has one or more methods of mechanical action like tumbler, agitator etc in them. The 4 basic functions of action in any washer are fill, wash, pump-out/ extract and spin.
The agitator is the most popular mechanical device used in washing machine. It has blades, and is fitted over the middle shaft in the tub of the washer. The agitator turns the clothes back and forth and in the process creates currents in the tub water, aiding the process of cleaning. Agitators with many numbers of vanes, sizes and designs are available. The vanes are usually in curved or vertical position. They are made of plastic or metal, generally aluminium.
Washing machines with agitators use an oscillating action when it is in the wash cycle. Various methods are employed to drive the agitator. Some machines offer slow-speed wobbling movement to the agitator. In certain other cases a pulsating movement that goes up and down is offered. Though oscillating action is commonly used, certain machines use rotate motion in extraction mode. Washing machines with agitators are top loading.
Front loading washers have gained popularity in recent years. It has perforated cylinder made of aluminium or steel that is porcelain-enamelled. The tumbler method contains the clothes in the tub and rotates it in water. Inside the cylinder there are projections or baffles made to move the clothes well in water. When the clothes reaches a certain position they fall down, and the process goes on.
Generally tumble washers are front loading; however there are some which can take clothes from top or from a particular angle. The clothes tumble in the soapy water in wash cycle, slowly. When the damp-dry cycle is reached the cylinder rotates fast, throwing water off from clothes. Gears in the washing machine aid the fast and slow rotation of the machine.
Washing machines with agitator and tumbler need hot as well as cold water. The temperature of the water is controlled using a thermostat that operates on simple principle. You can use the switches to turn cold or hot water as required. If both switches, hot and cold, is turned on, you will get warm water.
A pump and an electric motor are incorporated in automatic washers. The motor runs clockwise in spin operations and while pumping water out. During agitate-rinse cycle and wash cycles the tumbler turns anti-clockwise. When the rinse cycle is done, water is pumped out, after which rinse cycle begins. The transmission tube of spin gets disengaged here, preventing the spinning of the basket. When the pump out procedure is about to complete, a solenoid frees the clutch spring to make spin basket revolve to haul out water from clothes. All through the pump out and spin time, the clockwise revolving of the motor frees the clutch.
Solenoids run the gear and clutch arrangements, detergent application, water flow control etc in automatic washers. However, the overall control is with the timer. The user selects a section of the control, and the timer or control presets the automatic action of the washing machine.

Your clothes can get damaged if care is not taken. Some tips are given here to assist you in washing coloured clothes in washing machine.
First of all, separate whites and coloured clothes. Clothes in pastel shades can be washed along with whites as they will not run. Dark-coloured clothes should be strictly separated from whites.
Secondly, you can turn the coloured clothes so that the good side goes in. Fading of colour on the good side can be reduced and bleeding of fabric dye can be controlled, by this action.
When washing coloured clothes which are new, immerse them in warm water mixed with ½ cup of clean white vinegar, for an hour. Often acid-based dyes are used in clothes, and vinegar will help to set the dye. If your clothes have berry-based dye on them, salt and water mixture will set the dye, so that the fabric does not bleed. The clothes should be soaked for a minimum of 1 hour. This is the third tip.
Avoid using detergents with bleaches. Bleaches will make colours fade. A washer should do the cleaning without the help of bleach. The fourth tip to be remembered while you wash coloured clothes is this.
Fifthly, wash colour clothes only in cold water. Hot water can prompt dyes to bleed. Cold water will help to set the dye.
When the washing procedures are done, take your clothes out and hang it up for drying. The moisture content in the washed clothes may make the dye run, if they are left without drying. This is the sixth golden step.
Finally, when drying clothes, ensure you do not hang whites and coloured ones nearby. Always hang the whites on one side of the line and coloured ones on the other.
If you follow these tips, your whites will stay sparkling white and coloured clothes fresh and new.
